CDCJune2017 - Day 4 - Charles Shipley

Day 4

The kind of man you'd meet on the golf course and have your heart instantly warmed by his friendly smile and kind words. Soon, you joke around a bit and get to know each other as you move from golf hole to golf hole. You soon find that this man is one of the most witty men you've met, and he makes you laugh until your sides hurt. He asks you your name and you tell him your name followed by your profession, so curiously you ask his name and his profession in turn. He replies, "My name is Charles Shipley - or 'Chip' for short - and I'm the town mortician." You're taken aback! How could a man with such a humorous man with such a warm and cheery presence on a daily basis be someone who deals with death so much!? Then you think about it. Does he see life as a gift, and has been living it to its fullest? Maybe being around death so often makes you really fond of life, perhaps? Whatever the reason, the moment and the thought has passed. The warm and sweet smile from Chip gives you the comfort that you and your loved ones will be well-cared for in life and in death having come to know him.

Anyways, I thought it was about time I try playing around with drawing an aged character rather than all the young-and-springy characters I'm used to drawing. Charles Shipley (aka "Chip") is heavily inspired by my grandpa personality-wise and profession-wise. My great-grandpa, grandpa, uncle, and my oldest cousin were/are all morticians. They are some of the funniest people I've ever known. Hehe. I guess it takes a special kind of personality to be dealing with death as your life!
